WhatsApp text Status feature is back on Android

If you hated the Whatsapp Status feature released in February, that used short videos and pictures instead put your hands up. Yup, I just did. The new feature worked pretty much similar to that of the Snapchat and Instagram stories. Not just the Status, but also "Contacts" that allowed you view each and every contact on your smartphone alphabetically, under one tab. As i rarely changed my whatsapp profile picture and status, "Status" made life hard while it lasted, "Status" update in February let go off that section and you had to search for a contact in the search bar to initiate a conversation. and I was glad when Whatsapp announced they will be bringing the old features back.

So, WhatsApp has started rolling out the old "text status" feature, although it is now called "About and phone number" and users can access it by going to their profile tab into settings. Also, you can access your entire contact list in an alphabetical order, just like before. Under the ‘Chats’ sections, a green icon on the bottom right is now visible.

This feature is only available to Android users, who would have to upgrade to Whatsapp 2.17.111 . In the coming weeks it will also be  available out to iOS users.

So vocal were the protests that WhatsApp apprently decided to bring the feature back. "We heard from our users that people missed the ability to set a persistent text-only update in their profile, so we've integrated this feature into the About section in profile settings," a WhatsApp spokesperson had said. "Now, the update will appear next to profile names anytime you view contacts, such as when creating a new chat or looking at Group info."

How to Get Text Status Back

1. Upgrading your Whatsapp is mandatory. Upgrade your Whatsapp app to Version 2.17.111. It is not yet available to all as the update roll out is gradual. In case you haven't got it, just wait for a day or two.

2.  Simply click on the three dots icon situated at the top right corner of your WhatsApp interface.

3. From the drop-down menu, click on the Settings and then head over to the "About and phone number" section and set a text status just like before.

PS: The text status looks exactly like the old one. It comes with the all the default status options like - Available, Busy, Urgently call only,At the movies etc.  The iOS users, sorry guys, you might have     to wait a little longer to get back and enjoy the old status feature.
